Wall Stone

Stone walls are one of the most iconic features of New England and make for wonderful DIY projects for ambitious home owners.

  • Palletized wall stone is hand selected wall stone that varies in thickness from 2 - 5 inches and are sizes that can be managed by most individuals. One pallet weighs 1.5 tons and can produce up to 18 SF of wall face. $257.40 per pallet. Occasionally, we will run out of palletized wall stone, so try and call to put your order in well in advance of your needs.

  • Bulk wall stone is our cost effective option for building big walls. Best used for retaining walls and it often contains stones that require at least two people to lift or move. This is the option most often selected by professional landscapers and masons. The availability of bulk wall stone is usually no issue.

  • Palletized snapped wall stone is the option people select when they want to achieve a more modern or contemporary look. The snapped edges are very gray and clean. Additionally, the wall stacks very tight, making for minimal gaps between each stone when done correctly. The snapped wall is typically available.

  • To finish a wall it is a popular choice to cap it. To do this we snap the edges of stone that is 2 - 3 inches thick to the width the wall has been built. These pieces are then placed on the top of the wall to finish it.

Flagging

Flagging stone are the sheets of stone pneumatically split apart from large blocks. These slabs of flat stones are perfect for walkways, patios, and even for capping stone walls.

  • Palletized flagging is an excellent option for the DIYer. Pieces are rarely larger than 2’ X 2’ and you get at least 70 square feet per pallet. This is the optimal product for your garden pathways. This product is always available.

  • This is another great option for a homeowner looking to do a weekend project. Some of these pieces could weigh up to 100 pounds, but can still be lifted or slid along the ground by most individuals. This is almost always available.

  • This size is for the really ambitious DYIer. Typically, whoever is doing the project will have a tractor at their disposal (Or some strong and motivated friends). Demand can be high at times and it is best to get an order placed well in advance.

  • At this size you are looking at pieces that are 3.5’ X 3’ to 2’ X 7’ and weigh a few hundred pounds each. These sizes really require a machine to move around. At this size it is recommended that you consider finding a professional stone mason to complete the project. Demand is often high and orders need to be placed well in advance.

Steps and Landings

Steps and Landing are often an integral part of a project and when done right, can make for a beautiful addition to one’s home.

Steps and landings are difficult to price and it is recommended you call to get pricing and availability for the size step you are looking for.

Delivery Options

  • Sugarledge Delivery

We have a tandem axle dump truck we can use to make deliveries for medium size orders. The truck can be loaded with up to 14 tons of material from flagging to aggregate.

  • Third Party Delivery

We also partner with local carriers for a variety of alternative delivery methods. Through these partnerships we have access to triaxles, flatbeds, flatbed and moffett combinations, and smaller dump truck options.

  • Site Conditions

It is important that as you place your order and establish your delivery method you consider the site conditions where you are having the order delivered. You must be aware of where your septic is, what the clearance is on any overhead power lines, and that the site ground conditions are sufficient for a truck weighing in excess of 30,000 pounds to be able to drive over. Additionally, there needs to be space for a truck to turn around and there cannot be any obstacles in the way of the delivery.

FAQs

Do I need to put anything down on the ground before I build my wall or walkway?

For very small projects, like garden stepping stones, or small walls around flower gardens it is not necessary to extensively prep the ground. For larger projects like walkways or larger walls it is important to remove the sod and have a base of drainage stone in order to have a long lasting installation.

Do I need any special tools to work with this stone?

For the vast majority of home owner projects no special tools are necessary. In many cases you don’t need any tools at all. For larger walls or patios a hammer and chisel is sufficient to get the job done. For work with very tight tolerances a grinder and masonry blade can be helpful.

How heavy is the stone?

The stone weighs 170 pounds per cubic foot. What that means for the home owner is that for palletized wall you can see pieces that can weigh upwards of 75 pounds. For palletized flagging you can have pieces that weigh in access of 150 pounds.

How hard is it to do home projects with stone?

The answer to this questions is: it depends. Factors to consider are: Where am I personally in my physical health? Can I lift 75 to 100 pounds? If no, what is the scope of my project? Also, how critical the project gets completed by a certain time?

Depending on how you answer the above questions is what will determine whether a DIY project is best, or if you should hire the work out.

Who do you recommend to do masonry work?

We work with hundreds of masons and landscapers every year. Depending on where the project is located we can give you several recommendations on who to call. As a general rule of thumb, it is good to call multiple masons and landscapers and get quotes and availability for your project.

How far in advance do I need to order my stone?

Depending on what type of project you are doing and which type of stone you need that will dictate how far in advance you need to call. As a good rule, you should call as soon as you know you want to do the project.
